Top ten in-car gadgets for 2014
Life has become so much more technology driven in recent years, with the arrival of smart phones, tablets and endless other gadgets in our everyday lives. And our cars are more than keeping up.
These days, gadgets that would have seemed outlandish even in a Bond car just a few years ago, are becoming commonplace, turning every journey into a technological adventure. Our top ten gadgets for entertainment, comfort, convenience and pure indulgence are
1. The in-car mobile 4G hotspot
The EE Buzzard allows you to create your own Wi-Fi hotspot as you drive along, supporting up to ten devices for you and your passengers. It’s about the size of a drink can, so it fits neatly into most cup holders, and plugs in to your cigarette lighter. Keep the children entertained so you can focus on driving.
2. The lavazza espressgo
Tiredness can kill; you can forget terrible service station coffee with this handy device, which allows you to brew your own fresh Italian coffee on the go from special pods. Make sure you pull over to a safe spot and try not to spill your caffeine fix!
3. The dash-cam
The dashboard mounted camera is becoming a must have on the roads these days, to record everything from accidents to incredible events as you drive along. It can be really useful in an insurance claim and could make you a fortune on YouTube should you be lucky enough to catch the next viral sensation.
4. Engine Data Readers
You can now get every last detail about your engine’s performance sent straight to your mobile or tablet thanks to the iODB2 data reader. Study it and then tweak and tune your engine to squeeze every last ounce of performance and economy from it.
5. Night vision to see in the dark
Headlights are all very well, but when it comes to spotting that fox that’s about to run out in front of you, nothing quite matches the infra red night vision system on the BMW 5-series. It can spot a person or an animal in the dark at 300 yards.
6. Intruder alert
Volvo have added a heartbeat detector for the S80, so you can check ahead to see if anyone is lurking in your car in that dark car park.
7. Street sounds
We’re all guilty of singing in the car; an upgrade to DAB digital radio is well worth the investment to avoid the constant need to retune as you drive so you can concentrate on driving (and hitting the high notes!)
8. Luxury lighting
Forget struggling with a single ceiling mounted courtesy light; LED light sources are appearing increasingly as interior convenience lights in various locations, with finely focused lighting on console control surfaces and in cabin storage areas.
9. Next generation sat navs
Sat navs are no longer clunky, robotic devices we all loved to hate. Today’s sat navs offer big screen, zoomable, full multi-media access, with much simpler interfaces and even voice activation. Yes – you can answer back!
10. Super in-car charging
The more technology we take into our cars, the more we need to charge so the in car charger is now essential. Choose from simple plug-ins with one or two USB ports, to complex glove box inverters that convert 12DC to 240VAC to power most devices.
